Hyphen Oil Control Daily Exfoliating 2% AHA BHA Cleanser Review
Review
Hyphen’s oil control daily exfoliating cleanser is good, but there are a few important limitations to be aware of.
So keep reading…
This product has two mild and effective cleansing agents and several hydrating ingredients. Every cleansing agent, however mild, can dry the skin a little, but hydrating ingredients in this product negate this dryness.
It has 2% niacinamide. Niacinamide, at 2%, can regulate sebum production. This benefit is helpful for oily skin. People with oily skin have excess oil production problems. Niacinamide helps control the excess oil production.
So far, so good…
Now, here is where the issue is….It is more of a limitation than an issue. Let me explain…
Salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids comprise 2% of the product. At this amount, these ingredients will not provide thorough exfoliation.
Exfoliation removes old cells, excess oil, and unwanted hair follicles. These are all unwanted junk on the skin that gives it a dull look, dehydrates it, and causes blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and sometimes acne.
Cleansing agents cannot eliminate this type of junk. They can eliminate the regular dirt on our skin, but not this type of junk.
One more layer of complexity with this type of junk is that they go and clog the pores. Pores are small openings on the skin. Cleansing agents cannot get to the pores and scoop out this junk.
Only exfoliants can get rid of this junk. And this is where exfoliating serums come in. Exfoliating serums have a higher concentration of exfoliants than this cleanser.
This cleanser cannot thoroughly exfoliate.
But it has a place for people with oily skin.
Oily skin is more likely to be clogged with excess oil, so people with this type of skin need to exfoliate more than people with other skin types. Like this one, a cleanser with exfoliants is more helpful for oily skin than a cleanser with no exfoliants.
But keep in mind that this cleanser will only exfoliate your skin mildly. If you already have breakouts like acne, you probably need a cleanser with a higher concentration of exfoliants. This cleanser will be of little help in those cases.
This cleanser is more of a maintenance cleanser for people with oily skin.
Let me explain…
This is good for you if you have oily skin and no breakouts.
If you have oily skin and break out with pimples and acne, this cleanser will not help. It can be an excellent secondary cleanser used twice or thrice a week, but it cannot be your primary cleanser as it is not strong enough.
This cleanser could be too intense for daily use if you don’t have oily skin. You could use it as a secondary cleanser once or twice a week, but there are better cleansers for once-a-week exfoliant cleansing for dry skin.
If you have oily skin and use this cleanser, please remember that more than this is needed to meet your exfoliating needs. You will still need to use an exfoliating serum regularly.
A quick caution: don’t use this cleanser and an exfoliating serum on the same day.

Ingredient 1 – Aqua
Function: Solvent
It helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product.
Dissolved ingredients can spread better on the skin.
Ingredient 2 – Decyl Glucoside
Function: Cleansing agent
Mild surfactant (meaning not harsh on skin). It can remove dirt and oil from skin. This ingredient causes foam.
Ingredient 3 – Capryl Glucoside
Function: Cleansing agent
Mild surfactant. Can cause foam.
Ingredient 4 – Glycerin
Function: Humectant
Glycerin is a powerful humectant.
Humectants are water magnets. They attract water, like sponges. When applied to the skin’s surface, they draw water molecules from the atmosphere into the skin.
Ingredient 5 – Niacinamide
Function: Anti-inflammatory, Sebum Regulating
It reduces redness and calms the skin.
It regulates sebum (oil) production – reduces excess oil production.
Ingredient 6 – Salicylic Acid
Function: Chemical Exfoliant
It penetrates deeper into the skin, mixes with black and whiteheads, and scoops them out.
Salicylic acid reaches the pores in the skin and removes old cells, dirt, hair and excess oil that are stuck there. Pores are small openings in the skin, and by effectively cleansing them, you can prevent breakouts such as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and acne.
Reduces the redness and irritation that can come with cysts and pimples (anti-inflammatory).
It can be a little drying.
It belongs to a class of chemical exfoliants called BHAs (beta hydroxy acids)
Ingredient 7 – Glycolic Acid
Function: Chemical Exfoliant
It belongs to a class of chemical exfoliants called AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). It gets rid of dead old cells from the surface of this skin. These are the cells that are supposed to fall off on their own but don’t. These stubborn old cells hold on to each other and give skin a dull look. Glycolic acid breaks the bonds between these stubborn cells and thus forces them to fall of. It is the smallest of all AHAs used in skincare – because of its small size, it can penetrate a bit deeper into the skin. So it is more effective in its exfoliating function. It can also be a bit irritating for sensitive skin if used in large concentrations. Large concentrations can also be irritating for darker skin-toned people.
Ingredient 8 – Lactic Acid
Function: Chemical Exfoliant
It belongs to a class of chemical exfoliants called AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). It gets rid of dead old cells from the surface of this skin. These are the cells that are supposed to fall off on their own but don’t. These stubborn old cells hold on to each other and give skin a dull look. Lactic acid breaks the bonds between these stubborn cells and thus forces them to fall of. It is not irritating on the skin.
Ingredient 9 – Trehalose
Function: Humectant
Binds itself to water molecules and stops water molecules from evaporating. Hydrates skin.
Ingredient 10 – Xylitol
Function: Humectant
Binds itself to water molecules and stops water molecules from evaporating. Hydrates skin.
