Glycolic Acid 8% Exfoliating Liquid Review

Summary

Between 8 to 10% glycolic acid is a medium-strength glycolic acid product. These percentages are a good range for an exfoliating product.

Glycolic acid gets rid of the unwanted cells from the surface of the skin. This gives skin a smooth texture.

At the percentage used here, it also can stimulate collagen production to a small extent. Collagen gives skin its strength and protects it from fine lines. At 8%, glycolic acid might not exactly stimulate enough collagen to be classified as an anti-ageing ingredient, but it will at least give skin a good glow.

Glycolic acid is the smallest in its category (alpha hydroxy acids), which means it can penetrate and reach deeper layers of skin more effectively. This makes it more effective than other alpha hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid. Since it gets a bit deeper, it helps get rid of old cells that are stuck a bit deeper.

Since it can penetrate deeper, it can eliminate unwanted cells more effectively than other alpha hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid. If the unwanted cells have extra pigment (dark spots), that also goes away. This way, glycolic acid helps reduce surface-level pigmentation.

But since it gets to the deeper layers, it can also be a bit irritating. At 8%, it is not a high percentage – so it should be okay for most. If you have sensitive skin, do a small patch test on the side of your cheek (close to your ear in a corner) and see if you are okay with it.

There is much scaremongering on the internet about glycolic acid and darker skin tones. People with dark skin tones can absolutely use glycolic acid, but they need to be aware of what can go wrong and take adequate precautions to prevent anything from going wrong. This is too good an ingredient to stop using based on some scaremongering.

Darker skin tones:
Since glycolic acid can get deeper into the skin, it can irritate. It can irritate all skin types. But darker skin types react easily to irritation. The result of this reaction would be pigmentation. So that’s the problem. But if we can control the irritation, we prevent pigmentation. No need to stop using the ingredient.
Start small (8% is good). Do a patch test. If hesitant, even after a good patch-test outcome, use once a week and only when all is okay for a few weeks, and then move to twice a week. Use a good moisturiser after applying this product. A moisturiser with anti-inflammatory ingredients will be helpful. Panthenol, niacinamide, centella asiatica, calendula, licorice extract, oat extract, and ceramides are some examples of good anti-inflammatory ingredients. Use in the nighttime. Make sure you apply sunscreen the next day. Skin will be more prone to damage than normal from exposure to the sun.

It has sodium hyaluronate, which is a humectant. Humectants are water magnets—they hold onto water molecules. Having good humectants in an exfoliating product is helpful. When the exfoliating ingredients strip away the dead unwanted cells from the top layer of the skin, your skin becomes vulnerable to losing the hydration underneath (it can evaporate easily). Humectants hang on to the water molecules and keep them in the skin, thus helping the skin stay hydrated. Glycolic acid is also a humectant. It also binds to water molecules and helps keep the skin hydrated. It also assists in producing certain substances in cells that can attract moisture.

This is a good glycolic acid exfoliating product.

Is this product for you?

This product is for you:
If you are looking for an exfoliator that will get rid of unwanted cells from the surface of the skin.
If you are looking for an exfoliator that can go a bit deep and get rid of unwanted cells from there, too, and thus reduce pimples and reduces chances of acne forming.
If you want a deeper exfoliation than what acids like lactic would offer.

This product is not for you:
If your primary area of concern is blackheads and whiteheads.
If you have sensitive skin. You can use it but only after a patch test. Start small.
If you have dry or dehydrated skin.

But why do you need to exfoliate skin? If you don’t exfoliate regularly, skin will become dull and you will end up with lots of breakouts like pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and acne on skin.
Exfoliation brightens up your skin.

Dark skin tones should not disregard this product. If you do, you will risk missing out on the huge benefits of glycolic acid. Just be cautious. Here is an article that explains glycolic acid and darker skin tones.

Glycolic acid cannot treat acne– It cannot get rid of acne that’s already present in the skin.

Use it at night. Don’t forget sunscreen the next day (never forget sunscreen).

The product’s ingredients

Description of what the ingredients in Minimalist Glycolic Acid 8% Exfoliating Liquid do
Ingredient 1 – Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Water

Function: Solvent, Anti-inflammatory

It helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product.

Calms and soothes the skin.

Ingredient 2 – Glycolic Acid

Function: Exfoliant, Humectant

It gets rid of the old cells stuck on the skin’s surface. These old cells that are supposed to fall regularly but don’t fall off stick together and form a rough texture on the skin’s surface. It breaks the bonds that hold these old cells together – by doing that, it forces them to fall off.
When old cells fall off, newer ones replace them, brightening the skin.

Glycolic acid attracts water to the skin, thus adding hydration to the skin (humectant).

It is categorised as a chemical exfoliant. It belongs to the alpha hydroxy acids family.

It is the smallest of all alpha hydroxy acids used in skincare – because of its small size, it can penetrate a bit deeper into the skin. So it is more effective in its exfoliating function. It can also be a bit irritating for sensitive skin if used in large concentrations. Large concentrations can also be irritating for darker skin-toned people.

Glycolic acid also stimulates collagen. Collagen gives skin its strength, keeps it firm, and reduces wrinkles and fine lines. To stimulate collagen, glycolic acid should be used at 8% or above. At 25%, collagen levels significantly increase.
At 8%, there is a moderate increase. The increase at this level might not result in an anti-aging effect but will at least add glow to the skin.

Ingredient 3 – Triethanolamine

Function: pH adjuster

The pH level refers to how acidic or alkaline a product is. A pH adjuster adjusts the pH level of the product to be compatible with the skin’s pH.

Ingredient 4 – Propanediol

Function: Solvent, Penetration enhancer

It helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product.

It helps other ingredients, such as salicylic acid, to be more effective by enhancing their penetration.

Ingredient 5 – Aminomethyl Propanol

Function: pH adjuster

The pH level refers to how acidic or alkaline a product is. A pH adjuster adjusts the pH level of the product to be compatible with the skin’s pH.

Ingredient 6 – Phenoxyethanol

Function: Preservative

Protects the product against some bacteria.

Ingredient 7 – Sodium Hyaluronate

Function: Humectant

Humectants are water magnets. They attract water, like sponges. When applied to the skin’s surface, they draw water vapour from the atmosphere into the skin.

Humectants hydrate and plump up the skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate is a good humectant.

Ingredient 8 – Ethoxydiglycol

Function: Solvent

Dissolves ingredients that are not water-soluble. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better.

Ingredient 9 – Ethylhexylglycerin

Function: Preservative

Increases the shelf life of the product. Without preservatives, skin care products will go bad very quickly.

Ingredient 10 – Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate

Function: Chelating

Neutralises metal ions (Chelating). Chelating helps the product stay stable and effective for longer periods of time.
