How can I stop pigmentation on my face?

The following five ways can help stop pigmentation on the face:

Exposure to the sun’s UV rays is the leading cause of pigmentation.

Wearing good sunscreen can prevent most pigmentation on our skin.

Always remember to reapply sunscreen regularly.

When the sun is out, make sure to wear sunscreen even if you are indoors because the sun’s UV rays can travel through most glassed windows.

Regular sunscreen wear prevents both types of pigmentation: hyperpigmentation, in which a portion of the skin becomes darker than the rest (hyperpigmentation), and hypopigmentation, in which a portion of the skin is paler than the rest (hypopigmentation). This portion can be a large area, a small area, or a dot.

We need to reduce our skin’s inflammation. Inflammation usually leads to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

This inflammation can occur from acne, other breakouts on the skin, pollution and irritants, and minor trauma to the skin.

It can also occur from exposure to the sun’s UV rays, but if you use good sunscreen, inflammation from the sun’s rays will be managed.

Use good anti-inflammatory skincare products regularly to prevent pigmentation from inflammation.

It is important to remember that not all types of inflammation are visible. Most are not visible. Our skin gets inflammed daily. Therefore, regular use of anti-inflammatory skin care products will drastically prevent pigmentation.

Use tyrosinase inhibitor skincare ingredients. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that helps produce melanin—excess melanin results in hyperpigmentation.

Tyrosinase inhibitors interfere with tyrosinase activity and reduce the chances of an excess amount of melanin forming.

Use pigment-reducing skincare ingredients. These ingredients will either reduce the amount of excess melanin produced or prevent it from being distributed across cells.

Exfoliating your skin regularly removes old cells from the top layer. These old cells often have excess pigment, which can lead to pigmentation. Removing them also removes excess pigment, resulting in a brighter complexion.

However, exfoliation can leave the skin tender and prone to inflammation.

Inflammation is a leading cause of pigmentation, so it’s important to use anti-inflammatory ingredients after exfoliation to reduce the chances of pigmentation.
