Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream Review

It has good mild cleansing ingredients. As they cleanse, cleansing ingredients strip away moisture from the skin. Mild cleansing agents don’t strip away too much moisture. So this is a plus.

It also has an ingredient that can add some hydration to the skin. Hydrating ingredients in cleansers are helpful because they counterbalance the effect of cleansing agents to some extent.

It has salicylic acid. This ingredient is a good exfoliating agent. It gets into the deeper layers of skin and scoops out the old cells, oil, and dirt.

It has only one good exfoliant, salicylic acid. Though this is effective, considering where it is listed on the ingredient list (number 10), this ingredient alone is not enough to get rid of the flakiness and persistent dullness on the elbows and other parts of the body (like its marketing claims).

The product has a good texture and colour. But texture and colour have no functional role. The colour and texture give a good sensual experience.

When something looks and feels good, we assume it works. And so we are willing to pay a higher price. I am not saying this is not a good product. It is a good product.

I am just highlighting that the colour and texture don’t do much for the skin.

This is a body scrub — A bit less effective on the exfoliation side but a decent body scrub. The high price it is asking is more due to its texture and colour than its functions.

Function: Solvent

A solvent helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better.

Ingredient 2 – Peg-100 Stearate

Function: Cleanser

Cleanses

Ingredient 3 – Glyceryl Stearate

Function: Emollient, Emulsifier

Emollients soften and smoothen the skin.

An emulsifier keeps the oil-based and water-based ingredients in the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. They will separate

Ingredient 4 – Silica

Function: Absorbs

Used as an absorbent powder, Absorbs oil and sweat.

Ingredient 5 – Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate

Function: Cleanser

Makes the dirt to be rinsed off by enabling water mix with oils and dirt. It is not a harsh cleanser.

Ingredient 6 – Butylene Glycol


Function: Humectant, Solvent

It pulls water molecules from the atmosphere to the top layer of the skin – and thus adds hydration to the skin (humectant). In a cleanser, it adds hydration. Cleansers when they cleanse the skin, can reduce the hydration of the skin.

A solvent helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better. Butylene glycol is a good type of alcohol in skincare.

Ingredient 8 – Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Function: Cleanser

This ingredient is also called SLES. This is not to be confused with SLS. SLES is a good cleansing agent. It is mild on the skin. SLS, on the other hand, is very harsh on the skin.

Mild cleansing agents don’t strip away too much moisture when they cleanse. Harsh cleansing agents strip away too much moisture.

Ingredient 9 – Magnesium Aluminum Silicate

Function: Thickener, Texture enhancer

Enhances the texture of the product.

Used as a thickening agent.

Ingredient 10 – Salicylic Acid

Function: Exfoliant

Chemical exfoliant. It penetrates deeper into the skin, mixes with black and whiteheads, and scoops them out. It also removes old cells that are no longer helpful for the skin.

It belongs to the beta hydroxy acids family.

It helps treat acne. Reduces the redness and irritation that can come with cysts and pimples (anti-inflammatory).

It can be a little drying.
