Face Base Review

For dry skin, if this is the only moisturiser you are using every day, then it’s not good. It does not have enough ingredients to help dry skin on a daily basis.

It doesn’t have enough ingredients to calm and soothe the skin.

This is a good light-weight lotion that you can use underneath your makeup, irrespective of your skin type.

The product’s ingredients

Description of what the ingredients in Face Base do
Ingredient 1 – Aqua(Water)
Function: Solvent

A solvent helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better.
Ingredient 2 – Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil
Function: Strengthens skin barrier function, Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory

The top layer of our skin acts as a barrier. A strong barrier keeps skin hydrated and reduces breakouts on the skin. Linoleic acid is one of the components of the top layer of skin – and it plays an important role in the barrier function. Grape seed oil is high in linoleic acid.

Grape seed oil is high in Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a good antioxidant. Free radicals form on the skin due to exposure to environmental nasties, pollution, and UV rays. These free radicals are very nasty. They age the skin by killing good cells, and they also give the skin a dull appearance. An antioxidant fights free radicals and gets rid of them.

Grape seed oil has anti-inflammation properties. It calms and reduces the redness on the skin.
Ingredient 3 – Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Butter
Function: Emollient

Emollients soften and smoothen the skin. Cells in the top layer of the skin are arranged like bricks. There are some ingredients in between the cells that help the skin stay in good condition. These ingredients are usually not at an optimum level and this results in roughness on the skin. Emollients fill in the gaps in-between the cells. This makes the skin soft and smooth.

Emollients form a thin layer on top of the skin and prevent the moisture underneath it from evaporating into the atmosphere. Thus they keep the skin hydrated.

Jojoba oil is very close to the skin’s natural oils. And so, it gets absorbed by the skin easily.
Ingredient 4 – Propanediol
Function: Solvent, Humectant, Emollient

A solvent helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better.

Humectants are water magnets. They attract water. They are like sponges. When applied on the skin’s surface, they draw water vapour from the atmosphere to the skin. They can also draw water from the deeper layers of the skin to the surface of the skin. Humectants hydrate and plump up the skin.

Ingredient 5 – Glyceryl Stearate
Function: Emollient, Emulsifier

Emollients soften and smoothen the skin.

An emulsifier keeps the oil-based and water-based ingredients in the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. They will separate.
Ingredient 6 – Candelilla/Jojoba/Rice Bran Polyglyceryl-3 Esters
Function: Emulsifier, Thickener

It is a mixture of polyglycerin-3, candelilla wax, jojoba seed wax, and rice bran wax. This ingredient is an emulsifier and a thickener.

An emulsifier brings all the ingredients of the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. They will separate.

A thickener thickens the product.
Ingredient 7 – Xanthan Gum
Function: Thickener

Binds all ingredients in the product together.
Ingredient 8 – Cetearyl alcohol
Function: Emollient, Emulsifier

Emollients soften and smoothen the skin.

An emulsifier keeps the oil-based and water-based ingredients in the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. They will separate.

Some alcohols in skincare are not good for the skin. Cetearyl alcohol is a good type of alcohol for the skin.
Ingredient 9 – Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate
Function: Emulsifier

An emulsifier brings all the ingredients of the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix.
Ingredient 10 – Benzyl Alcohol
Function: Preservative

Increases the shelf life of the product. Without preservatives, skin care products will go bad very quickly.

Here, it is being used in a small quantity. It is safe. However, if you are allergic to benzyl alcohol, you might want to be careful. Otherwise, this is safe to use as a preservative in skincare products.
A quick note on other ingredients
These ingredients are all further down the ingredient list. So the amount used in the product is less. The amount of an ingredient used reduces as we go down the ingredient list. And most functional ingredients when used at lower rates, the effect they have won’t be the same as if they were used at higher rates.

It is important to remember that in the majority of skincare products when it comes to how much the ingredients help the skin, only the first 5 ingredients matter the most. After about the 7th ingredient, how much the ingredient can help the skin, reduces significantly.

It has a small amount of aloe vera juice. Aloe vera is hydrating to the skin.
It has a small amount of tocopherol. Tocopherol is vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. Here it will calm the skin and reduce redness.
