Tolérance CONTROL Soothing Skin Recovery Balm Review

Cleansing ingredients

The ingredient glycerin adds hydration to the skin

Aquaphilus dolomiae extract filtrate adds some soothing and calming benefits to the skin. This is the tenth ingredient on the list.

Shea butter and bees wax help in retaining hydration.

It has squalane which helps strengthen the barrier function of the skin. A strong barrier keeps the skin hydrated and prone to less breakouts.

It has a small ingredient list, which is good. Too many ingredients aren’t necessarily good for the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin.

It does not have any ingredients that can negatively affect sensitive skin.

It will not fix the fundamental problems that dry skin has. We need more skin barrier-strengthening ingredients to fix the issues that are common with dry skin.

It does not help in the recovery of skin. Squalane at number six cannot alone do this recovery job.

Also does not have too many ingredients that can reduce inflammation and calm the skin.

It is a hydrating moisturiser with no harsh ingredients for hypersensitive skin.

I see this product as more helpful for hypersensitive skin than dry skin.

As a regular moisturiser for hypersensitive skin, this is good. This is more of a maintenance product. We all need maintenance products.

We also always need strengthening products (products which do more than maintenance). So no problem in using this, but also use strengthening products in addition to this.

The product’s ingredients

Description of what the ingredients in Tolérance CONTROL Soothing Skin Recovery Balm do
Ingredient 1 – Avene thermal spring water (avene aqua)
Function: Solvent
A solvent helps in dissolving other ingredients in the product. Dissolved ingredients can spread and penetrate better.

The water is purified, so it is free of toxins and pollutants.

Avene is a place in France. The water used in this product is from the springs in Avene.

Depending on where you live, tap water can have harsh minerals that can leave your skin dry and prone to breakouts. This is especially true if you have sensitive skin.
Ingredient 2 – Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Function: Emollient

Softens and smoothens the skin.
Ingredient 3 –Glycerin
Function: Humectant (hydrates skin)

Glycerin is a water magnet. It attracts water. It is like a sponge. When applied on the skin’s surface, it draws water vapour from the atmosphere to the skin.

Because of its low molecular weight, glycerin can get to the deeper layers of the skin and add moisture to the deeper layer of the skin as well.

Glycerin is a powerful humectant. Glycerin hydrates and plumps up the skin.
Ingredient 4 – Cetearyl alcohol
Function: Emollient, Emulsifier

Emollients soften and smoothen the skin.

An emulsifier keeps the oil-based and water-based ingredients in the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. They will separate.

Some alcohols in skincare are not good for the skin. Cetearyl alcohol is a good type of alcohol for the skin.
Ingredient 5 – Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)
Function: Occlusive (keeps the skin hydrated)

Extracted from the kernels of the fruit of the shea tree.

It forms a protective layer on the skin, seals the water in, and prevents water from the skin’s surface from evaporating into the atmosphere.
Ingredient 6 – Squalane
Function: Skin-barrier strengthening, Emollient

The top layer of the skin acts as a barrier. As a barrier, its function is to keep skin hydrated and protect it from attacks from environmental nasties. A strong skin barrier keeps skin soft, plump, and free from breakouts. There are many compounds in the skin that help it to perform its barrier function.

One of them is squalene. Squalene can’t be used in skincare products in its form so it is converted to squalane (notice the spelling difference) and used in skincare products.

Skin recognises squalane in skincare products as one of its own, and allows it to penetrate and get to work in the deeper layer of skin. Squalane strengthens the barrier function and softens and smoothens the skin.
Ingredient 7 – Beeswax
Function: Emollient, Occlusive

Softens and smoothens the skin.

Forms a thin layer on top of the skin and prevents water from deeper layers of the skin from evaporating into the atmosphere. Helps skin stay hydrated. Hydrated skin is soft and plump.
Ingredient 8 – Cetearyl glucoside
Function: Emulsifier

It keeps the oil-based and water-based ingredients in the product together. Without it, the product’s ingredients will not mix. It binds all ingredients in the product together.
Ingredient 9 – Cetyl esters
Function: Thickener

Synthetic wax. Used as a thickening agent.
Ingredient 10 – Aquaphilus dolomiae extract filtrate
Function: Anti-inflammatory

Aquaphilus dolomiae is a bacteria found in Avene spring water. It is shown to calm and reduce the redness of the skin.
A quick note on other ingredients
These ingredients are all further down the ingredient list. So the amount used in the product is less. The amount of an ingredient used reduces as we go down the ingredient list. And most functional ingredients when used at lower rates, the effect they have won’t be the same as if they were used at higher rates.

It is important to remember that in the majority of skincare products when it comes to how much the ingredients help the skin, only the first 5 ingredients matter the most. After about the 7th ingredient, how much the ingredient can help the skin, reduces significantly.

The product has arginine. This is a cleansing agent. This is gentle and okay to use.

It has water as one of the last ingredients. Not sure about this. When Avene has gone out and specifically said it uses only Avene spring water, which it claims is excellent for human skin, why go in and add some regular water?
