Does Sunscreen Go On Face Before or After Moisturiser?

Moisturiser goes first. Sunscreen goes next.

Here are the reasons for this order:

When applied, sunscreens form an even, thin layer on the face. Most sunscreens, especially the water-resistant ones, contain emollients and/or occlusives. If sunscreen is applied first and moisturiser on top of it, the emollients/occlusives in the sunscreen will prevent any moisturiser from working well. Skincare products need to penetrate a bit to work well. Sunscreen blocks this form from happening. Sunscreen will still work well, but the moisturiser on top of it is a waste.
Studies have shown that if a moisturiser is applied first and sunscreen is on top of it, both sunscreen and moisturiser do their job. But this is only if it is a light moisturiser, not a thick cream or facial oil. If it is a thick cream or any oil, sunscreen can’t penetrate it to reach the skin. Sunscreen must be in contact with the skin to be effective.
So, the right order is to apply a moisturiser first, wait for 2 minutes, and then apply sunscreen.

If you apply makeup, the order is skincare first, followed by sunscreen, and then finally makeup.
